CAPIC (California Psychology Internship Council)

Youth and Family Services, Inc. takes immense pride in training the next generation of psychologists, social workers and MFTs. Across two decades, hundreds of clinicians --psychologists, social workers and MFTs -- have trained at our Institute.

Our Interns can choose to train in a variety of programs ranging from community-based outpatient individual, family and group psychotherapy with children, adolescents and their caregivers to day treatment programs for women in recovery.

In every program, emphasis is placed on understanding the “whole” client (i.e., intrapsychically, interpersonally, and socioculturally).

The work of the clinical staff is informed by principles of psychodynamic, family systems, narrative, and cognitive-behavioral theory, as well as chemical dependence treatment models.  YFS stresses collaboration, both among programs within the agency as well as with other local service providers.

YFS serves primarily an ethnically diverse, low-income, and high-risk population. Every year four advanced psychology interns are chosen to participate in YFS’ CAPIC accredited training program. Licensed Psychologists facilitate three weekly seminars (e.g., Clinical, Assessment and Grand Rounds).

The topics for the Clinical Seminar include DSM-IV assessment, clinical interviewing, legal and ethical issues, multicultural diversity, mandated reporting, assessment and treatment of physical/sexual abuse and neglect, orientation to managed mental health care systems, case management, play and family therapy, to name a few.

The Assessment Seminar reviews standardized intelligence (i.e., WISC-IV, WPPSI-III, WAIS-IV), achievement (i.e., WIAT-II, WRAT-3), and personality (i.e., Rorschach, MMPI-A, TAT, projective drawings, sentence completion, etc.), tests and neuropsychological screens (e.g., Bender Gestalt, VMI), while integrating ethics, cross cultural assessment, and test evaluation and construction.

Benefits include flexible work hours as well as a nominal stipend.
